Youth Assembly Member

My name is Weronika, I’m from Belfast and I joined the Youth Assembly as I’ve always had an interest in the politics and wanted to be an advocate for the young people in my community.

My time as a ‘YAM’ (Youth Assembly Member) is one I will never forget. Walking up to Parliament Buildings for plenaries and events, meeting with MLAs to give views on legislation and monthly online meetings are only a handful of the experiences that make the Youth Assembly such an incredible place. A few of my favourite memories were meeting with Justice Minister Naomi Long to discuss the new Justice Bill and its impact on young people and last year meeting with the US Ambassador to the UK; not only did we meet local politicians but international ones too! Being part of the Youth Assembly has shown me just how much the voice of young people matters as I never expected to have such an important say on issues in our society.

As a YAM, not only did I gain a deeper insight into the world of politics but also developed so many skills, especially my confidence and public speaking. I can still remember how frightened I was to make my first speech in the Assembly Chamber, I was trembling, but now this is like second nature to me! In fact, in June I gave evidence to the Assembly’s Education Committee – something I never thought I would have the confidence to do. I also learned the value of teamwork and working with other young people from different backgrounds to make our community a better place. The experience at the Youth Assembly has changed me and helped me to grow as a person.

Over our two-year mandate we were actively involved with several pieces of legislation, one of which was the Tobacco and Vapes Bill. We attended online sessions with politicians and health officials to deepen our understanding of the Bill, gave our views, and helped shape it. If you want to make a real impact on others’ lives and have a say on what matters to you, the YA is the perfect place!

If you’re thinking of joining, then go for it! You don’t need to have vast political knowledge or lots of confidence. You will learn and grow along the way, trust me, you won’t regret it. There is a kind and caring team of staff who are always looking out for you; making the Youth Assembly so special, and all your fellow YAMs who support you in all that you do.

What are you waiting for? The Youth Assembly needs you!
