My name is Imogen, I am 15 years old, and I live in a small village in Tyrone. I am elated to be part of the Youth Assembly, and I am so excited to become part of something where young people’s views are considered in laws that affect us.
On 29 November, the new Youth Assembly Members attended the Parliament Buildings for an induction day. The induction day was a wonderful experience and gave me insight into the next two years. The atmosphere was amazing, and everyone was so welcoming. It was enlightening to find out what the past mandates have achieved and to see how they have shaped the policies that involve us.
So, what inspired me to join the Youth Assembly? I wanted the chance to contribute to change and to ensure that young people’s voices are heard alongside other young people who share the same passion. I wanted to be part of a group who does not just discuss problems, but one who works to create a better future for the young people of Northern Ireland.
One key issue that matters most to me is education. Schools need to place more emphasis on student wellbeing and health rather than focusing solely on exams. I believe that schools should focus on the whole person, rather than just their academic performance. In the future, I am most excited to work with other young people, see different perspectives, and develop real solutions to make a difference.
